How you Dress Matters

Cognitive psychologists Hajo Adam and Adam Galinsky have been studying how wearing specific articles of clothing effect the person wearing them. Clothing can enhance our psychological states and it can improve our performance on tasks. This is why at J.Hilburn we believe what you wear says everything about you.  It says who you are and who your refuse to be…….It says what matters most isn't who you wear, but how you wear yourself.  The right shirt, the perfect suit is the one that fits your body and soul.  Your skin, your life, your attitude.  The right clothes should fit you like they were made for you, because at J.Hilburn that is what we do.  Dressing well isn't hard to do when you have a personal stylist who is interested in creating a style that is unique to you.  A style that says who you are and who you refuse to be.

Beau Brumell

In this issue we will focus on suiting of 2014.
The european influence is still upon us.  The pant legs are narrow and short. The sportcoats are very slim fitted and short.  Checks and plaids are leading the way in patterns.

THE ARTIST REBEL DANDY

The Dandy, Beau Brumell, a 19th Century icon is known for his pared down, fitted uniform like grey suit.  Beau was a creator of his own uique style.  His style did not scream fashion, in fact, fashion did not even speak.
At J.Hilburn, we recongize this and it is our mission to bring style, class and character back to the gentleman's wardrobe.
As your personal stylist, I will provide you with monthly fashion tips that will speak to the individual style of each of each of you.

Navy and Charcoal Suiting:
Next to navy, a charcoal grey suit  is the most important suit to have in your closet.  The style of the suit varies with the times, but a classic grey suit with a single notch lapel and 2 buttons will never go out of style.  Over time, it will wear and the luster of the wool will begin to show a slight sheen.  If the wool is not a finely woven super 120 it might appear to be thicker in texture and will seem more dated.  The coordinating trousers that you choose can be cuffed or uncuffed, but if you are under 5'8" tall an uncuffed trouser is more flattering. Pleats or no pleats are also a personal preference, but 90% of all men look better in a flat front trouser.

Fall is the time to think about cleaning out your closet and getting rid of the clothes that no longer fit you properly.  A great item to add to your social wardrobe is a corduroy sport coat that can be worn with either your dress or casual shirts as well as with your denim jeans, khakis, or dress trousers.

The way to tell if your sport coat fits properly is to look at the shoulders.  If the shoulders don't line up, there is nothing that can be done to make it look good.  The length of the coat should be determined by wear the bottom hem line falls.  If it lines up with the knuckles of your hand, the length is correct.  The sleeve length should allow for 1/2"-3/4" of your shirt sleeve to be exposed.

How to fold a pocket square with two corners up:

Another popular way to fold a pocket square is the “two corners up” fold. This folding technique is better suited for thinner materials such as silk pocket squares. The second tip gives the pocket square more hold and it is less likely to slide around in your breast pocket.

Instructions on folding a pocket square: Two corners up

Folding a pocket square two corner up
  1. Lay the pocket square on a flat surface.
  2. Fold the pocket square near the center so that it looks like two overlapping triangles (2 corners have show at the tip)
  3. Then, fold in one of the sides.
  4. Do the same for the opposite side. You are done!

Typical mistakes when folding the pocket square two corners up.
